Synopsis:

It was the job she had dreamed of since childhood. But on her very first day, when an unnerving encounter drags up memories Sophie Greenwood would rather forget, she wonders if she has made a mistake. A fatal mistake.

What is her ambitious young assistant really up to? And what exactly happened to Sophie’s predecessor? When her husband and daughter are pulled into the nightmare, Sophie is forced to confront the darkest secrets she has carried for years.

As her life begins to fall apart at work and at home, Sophie must race to uncover the truth about her new job…before it kills her.

Claire’s Review:

I thought Follow You Home was amazing when I read it last year but The Devil’s Work surpasses it in my humble opinion. I devoured the book, reading when my boys would let me.

I could identify with Sophie and her return to work nerves. Yes I didn’t have quite the career break she did but simply going back from maternity leave the first time round wasn’t easy and took me a while to settle back into the routine and getting my brain working the same. It can be a blow to the confidence.

I was convinced I knew who was the tormentor but bang, there’s the twist! And then another and another. Blindsided by all the shenanigans in the office and Sophie’s history, I did not see it coming until it hit me, metaphorically speaking, in the face.

I was lucky enough to attend an Author Chat in July hosted by Mark Edwards. To listen to him talk about the writing of this book was fascinating especially as the most I can write is a review or a procedural document as part of the day job. I do love the way he can take the most normal situation and twist it into a dark and nervy experience; neighbours, dream holiday, new job….

I love Mark’s writing both as a solo author but also his collaborations with the brilliant Louise Voss. I hope there are many more books from him in the future!

A huge thanks to Mark Edwards for sending me a copy of The Devil’s Work to read.
