Hey, #bookjunkies! My ‘lil star Guest Reviewer, Claire Knight is sharing her thoughts on the absolutely *delicious* Robert Bryndza’s Dark Water! It’s a cracking book, a cracking review and I am thrilled to share it here on my blog! ??
Synopsis:
Beneath the water the body sank rapidly. Above her on dry land, the nightmare was just beginning.
When Detective Erika Foster receives a tip-off that key evidence for a major narcotics case was stashed in a disused quarry on the outskirts of London, she orders for it to be searched. From the thick sludge the drugs are recovered, but so is the skeleton of a young child.
The remains are quickly identified as seven-year-old Jessica Collins. The missing girl who made headline news twenty-six years ago.
As Erika tries to piece together new evidence with the old, she must dig deeper and find out more about the fractured Collins family and the original detective, Amanda Baker. A woman plagued by her failure to find Jessica. Erika soon realises this is going to be one of the most complex and demanding cases she has ever taken on.
Is the suspect someone close to home? Someone is keeping secrets. Someone who doesn’t want this case solved. And they’ll do anything to stop Erika from finding the truth.
‘Claire’s Rating: 5/5
Claire’s Review:
Erika Foster is back and this time she’s taken an unintentional step to solving a cold case of a missing child that has reared its ugly head when the underwater search team discover a bagged up skeleton during a drugs search. Erika can’t get the case out of her head so being the tenacious strong willed woman she is, demands to head up the investigation even though it’s not within her role. Is this the case that will break her as it did the previous investigating officer, Amanda Baker?
I love Erika, she’s more settled in this story than in her previous outings however the investigation into Jessica Daniels ‘ disappearance is bringing up emotions that were buried deep down. Thrown into the mix is her sister and two small children taking an unexpected trip to the UK not to mention a mysterious pairing who are trying to stay one step ahead of the investigation by any means. Erika’s life is being turned upside down!
The whole Daniels family is a little odd, but then again who knows how they’d react to the disappearance of such a young family member followed by the splintering of the family through divorce. Grief can do strange things to people.
This fast paced crime thriller kept me guessing! Twisting and turning through the investigation, I thought I had it sussed until *bang* –nope that’s me wrong again!
I can’t wait to read the next Erika Foster instalment from Robert Bryndza. These books keep getting better and better! The writing is so addictive; I felt drawn into Erika’s world, unable to leave until I hit the end of the story!
