My Review:
I was given this book by the author in exchange for an honest review. Next to “all things crime”, my second favourite genre to read is horror, so I was really pleased when I was asked to take part in this Blog Tour and review Acolyte.
When the book started out I was not sure what I was going to make of it. My interest was piqued but I was not hooked immediately. The reason for this is that the religious undertones had me thinking more of Dan Brown than Stephen King….what a mistake that was!
The horror element crept up on me slowly but when it hit…I was hooked! The book can be quite gory in parts, and if you are a ‘visual reader’ like me–I tend to picture the story in my head as I go along–there will be times your stomach may do a few turns!
The book was descriptive in all the right places. Despite the gore, you could feel the coldness of the underground caves, see the mist, be enveloped by the darkness. I loved how eery it felt at times and mixing the past with the present made the whole feel even more creepy than I thought it would.
I also thought the characters were well developed. You almost felt a part of the story as each element of the past and present intertwined. There were times I did have to stop and think about what was happening and to whom but for me, that just drew me in even more.
How did I know I liked this book? That was easy…when it ended I knew I had the read book 2! I really enjoyed this writing style and look forward to what happens next in this series.
I definitely would recommend reading this to anyone who enjoys horror with a twist!
