If someone was in your house, you’d know … Wouldn’t you?
But the Hunter family are deaf, and don’t hear a thing when a shocking crime takes place in the middle of the night. Instead, they wake up to their worst nightmare: the murder of their daughter.
The police call Paige Northwood to the scene to interpret for the witnesses. They’re in shock, but Paige senses the Hunters are hiding something.
One by one, people from Paige’s community start to fall under suspicion. But who would kill a little girl?
Was it an intruder?
Or was the murderer closer to home?
Set in Scunthorpe the reader is faced with conflict, fear, judgements, vulnerability, doubt, relationships, anger, manipulation, secrets, neglect, grief, guilt and mistrust – OH MY! ?
An absolutely BRILLIANT opening – creepy, emotive and I was HOOKED immediately! WHO is the stranger? I thought the fact the the story is riddled with unreliable characters really added to the suspense – who do I believe? It’s told in first person POV and the characterisation is just fantastic – unique with an authentic feel – for a debut, I think this book smashed it!
Character wise, the reader gets into the heads of a few – some you feel sympathy for and others make you cringe. Paige Northwood works as an interpreter and we see the story from her POV. She has a personal interest in the case but is she too close? I really liked her character and hoped that she would find the truth needed to solve the case.
DI Forest – could she be anymore unlikable!? This character evoked such negative feelings in me but also drew me more to Paige as I felt sorry for her every time she had to deal with the DI. Saying that she was a great contrast to another copper in the story – DI Singh. The author did a superb job at bringing all the characters to life! My notebook was filled with suspects, questions and loads of ‘OMG’s!’
Would I recommend this book? Ab-so-friggin-lutely! A pacy, suspense-filled, twisty and compelling read – I can’t wait to see what’s next in store for this author! Definitely #onetowatch!
