We return to Gavrick / Sweden in Will Dean’s fantastic follow up to Dark Pines – RED SNOW where the reader faces suicide, loss, regrets, secrets, the past, relationships/family, jealousy, grudges, sacrifice, guilt, lies, death, forgiveness, #ATownFullOfVictims and the search for answers. What a brilliant journey!!
I loved Dark Pines…seriously LOVED it and you can read my review here, so you can imagine how bloody excited I was to get my hands on a copy of Red Snow at Harrogate 2018. I can’t believe I managed to wait so long to read this, as it taunted me from my bookcase, every-single-time I walked passed it. The opening to this novel is AMAZEBALLS! ?? But then again, I never expected anything less from Will Dean. Atmospheric with a fantastically written slow but steady build up to the OMG-moment and ?BOOM!?- the sh*t gets real, peeps! This novel oozes with mystery and for me, it was perfectly paced. Once I started, that was it – I was hooked. There is such a superbly sinister feel to this novel, this series so far in fact, but also a strong sense of community, place and jeopardy – I ADORED it!
Character-wise – well Tuva Moodyson is back – need I say more?! Such a brilliant character – I am drawn to her! Tuva is just one of those characters who gets under your skin; full of passion; curious almost to a fault; despite being deaf, she uses this to her advantage rather than treating it as a hindrance; determined and strong-willed – you want her to succeed and you bite your nails when things aren’t going to plan. I could talk for hours about Tuva, and wonder what in the world will happen now that she is spreading her wings further afield! Be careful Tuva!!
And what does Mr Dean do to make it all the more gripping? Well Gavrik has a new officer in town by the name of Noora and ooooooh – what a storyline this turned out to be. ??✈️ I love the relationship between Tuva and the police, Thord being one… but with Noora in the mix, well this just made me smile. I will wait with bated breath to see where this goes as it can’t be over… it has only just started. So many questions – I mean, what about Tammy- another great character and Tuva’s best friend – could there be some tension here? Hmmm…..
Then of course there is the Grimbergs – especially Cecilia – they were a mysterious bunch which added to the tension in the story. ? I just didn’t know what to think. But I do know that I simply adored Cecilia and her extravagance – I could picture her in my mind and I love when that happens. You know, when you become so immersed in a story, it’s like you are right there! THAT! ??
I really want to go on and on about the characters, storyline, narrative – the whole lot, but I really do fear that in my excitement I just might let something slip that would spoil it for others. So, I will stop (but ?? SQUEEEEEEAL ?? about the sisters…ha ha- such a mad pair!!) and just say that this book certainly will end up one of my #TopReads of 2019. Of that, there is no doubt.
Saying that, it’s obvious that I recommend this book, right!? A murderous mystery, full of a deliciously deceitful cast of characters – ok, no more alliteration, I promise ? – Red Snow is everything I love about reading and more! Easily read as a standalone, I highly recommend you grab a copy of this superb novel today!
